Should You Take Your Kids To Disneyland?

I’ve talked to a lot of people who were trying to take their kids on a trip to Disneyland.  That’s probably good.  I’m sure the kids will like it.  Even my parents took my to Disneyland one time.

Let’s see…what do I remember?  Oh yeah, it was fucking hot.  Something over a hundred at least.  I remember being on something called splash mountain or some such thing where you were supposed to splash down in a pond of water at the end.  I remember being disappointed that we didn’t get wet.  As I mentioned, it was fucking hot.

I also remember sleeping beauty’s castle.  What a rip that was.  First off, it wasn’t a ride or anything like that.  It was a bunch of little displays behind glass.  And it wasn’t air conditioned.  And there were so many people that you had to take a step, wait, and then take a step again.  And it was hot.  Did I mention that it was hot.

Whose bright idea was that?  Take a place that is going to be massively crowded and not air condition it?  In Southern California?  That is boring as well?  I’m not sure who designed that, but I’m pretty sure later jobs involved interrogation chamber design.

Anyway, I’m rambling.  It’s been a long day of moving and I’m not anywhere near done yet.  So, should you take your kids to Disneyland?  Again, probably.  They’ll probably have a lot of fun.  I swear I did, though all I can remember at this point is being pissed that I didn’t get wet on that one ride and sweltering to death at sleeping beauty’s castle.  I guess the difficult parts are sometimes the memories that end up lasting.

About David S. Atkinson

David S. Atkinson enjoys typing about himself in the third person, although he does not generally enjoy speaking in such a fashion. However, he is concerned about the Kierkegaard quote "Once you label me you negate me." He worries that if he attempts to define himself he will, in fact, nullify his existence...

Your rant about Disneyland reminds me of a Chuck Palahniuk quote: “It’s so hard to forget pain, but it’s even harder to remember sweetness. We have no scars to show for happiness. We learn so little from peace.”
I don’t know where or when he said it, I just found it in a newspaper article and liked it so much I cut it out and put it on my refrigerator – that altar of humor and philosophy, randomness and reminders.

It would be a wasted opportunity to show your kids the wonders of the real world rather than some plastic temple to the spectacle of capitalism. Go camping in the hundreds of national parks and get out to see the real world as a family together. Cycling, waking, cooking, wildlife… real family memories that grow you as person and a family unit.

    • Did that. Disneyland was part of a 3 week vacation driving all around the Southwest. Plenty of camping and whatnot, though all I remember of that is falling off a rope swing while camping at either Yellowstone or Yosemite and darn near breaking my ribs.
