It Feels Weird That I’m Undecided About Kim Kardashian Suing Old Navy For The “Super C-U-T-E” Commercial

I know this isn’t even something I should be paying attention to, but I actually looked into this (see this article) after hearing that Kim Kardashian was suing Old Navy over their “Super C-U-T-E” commercial.  I looked into it, and I am honestly not sure how I think this should play out.

For those who have not already gotten sucked into this crap, Kim apparently is suing because Old Navy ran this ad using a model that looks like her (Melissa Molinaro).  Kim claims that the model looks enough like her that consumers will be confused that it is Kim and think that she is endorsing Old Navy.

Granted, I can see why Kim would be upset.  Since she doesn’t actually DO anything, her image is all she has.  She has somehow manages to create it out of nothing and turn it into a marketable commodity.  Good for her.  Not only does she not get paid by Old Navy for this, but if consumers really start to associate her with Old Navy then what consumers think of her image could change.  It isn’t like Old Navy is exactly glamor or anything.

At the same time, I have to feel sorry for Melissa Molinaro.  It sounds like this whole thing kind of ticks her off.  Should she not be able to get work just because she looks like Kim?  I don’t think so.  Unfortunately, it isn’t that simple because I also don’t think Old Navy should be able to use Melissa Molinaro to make it look like they have Kim Kardashian in a commercial.  Resemblance is one thing, but if they are sneakily half-assedly passing Melissa off as Kim, then Kim really does have a case.

Take a look at the “Super C-U-T-E” commercial (if you can stand it).  It’s true, Melissa really does look like Kim.  Not only that, she is made up a lot like Kim usually is.  She is behaving a lot like Kim usually does.  I don’t know if Old Navy made Melissa Molinaro bang Ray J, but I wouldn’t be surprised.

Is this all just a resemblance, or is Old Navy deliberately trying to pass Melissa off as Kim?  I’m not sure.  If I hadn’t known it was Melissa and not Kim when I first saw the commercial, I probably would have thought it was Kim.  Even knowing, on a subconcious level it still felt like Kim.

Frankly, I’m extremely disturbed that I’m even paying attention to this.  I despise Kim Kardashian.  I despise all that she is emblematic of in modern culture.  I’m not even particularly fond of Old Navy.  So why am I even looking into this?  That is the part that really bothers me.

However, he is concerned about the Kierkegaard quote "Once you label me you negate me." He worries that if he attempts to define himself he will, in fact, nullify his existence...

Kardashians lawsuit states that Old Navy is trying to make people think she is associated with the brand shes suing for the unauthorized use of her name likeness identity and persona. The ad featuring model-actress-singer Molinaro styled to look just like Kardashian has become a viral video hit and Kardashian is particularly irked that Old Navy is tweeting at her about the campaign thus linking the tweets to Kardashians own account… The names are sooooo similar I can see how people can get confused. Melissa Molinaro is way better. Everyone is totally sick of the no-talent famous-for-nothing Kardashian clan they just need to disappear and that includes Bruce…
