You Can Own A Piece Of “Pearls Before Swine” History, If You Have More Spare Cash Than Me

I saw on Stephan Pastis’s blog that he apparently put one of his original Pearls Before Swine strips up on ebay to benefit a charity in Northern California. This is actually pretty cool. Not only is it a strip I know and remember fondly (I’m memorized most by this point), Pastis never sells original strips.

Really. He doesn’t just say he doesn’t. He doesn’t. Otherwise, I’d own one. Your best chance other than this is to be a famous cartoonist who sends him an original strip that he likes well enough to send one back. Granted, you’d have to be an artist he likes better than himself, but the chances are good if you’re somebody like Scott Adams, Darby Conley, or virtually anybody whose strip appears in a major newspaper. If not, start clicking on ebay.

Of course, you better have some free cash. I got the ball rolling because I could stretch far enough for the initial bid of $500. Please do not tell my wife that I bid. We are saving for a trip to France and I keep saying “But we can’t afford that.” If she found out I big $500 on an original comic strip I will lost my credibility. Still, I didn’t have much to worry about. I was outbid extremely quickly. In fact, as of the time I’m writing this, bidding is up to $676.66.  There are still 8 days left.

And, though I won’t get an original Pearls Before Swine out of this, which is sad, it will be raising some good money for charity. That’s cool. Bet you didn’t imagine Stephan would do anything for a charity that wasn’t himself, but you’d apparently be wrong. Maybe his wife made him, but the charity still benefits.

Either way, go check out the auction. If you have more free cash than me then maybe you can get what I would kill to have. Incidentally, if you do, please let me know where you live and when the strip arrives in the mail. Thank you.

About David S. Atkinson

David S. Atkinson enjoys typing about himself in the third person, although he does not generally enjoy speaking in such a fashion. However, he is concerned about the Kierkegaard quote "Once you label me you negate me." He worries that if he attempts to define himself he will, in fact, nullify his existence...
