OF COURSE PEOPLE ON AVERAGE SAVED MONEY SWITCHING TO YOUR CAR INSURANCE! OTHERWISE THEY WOULDN’T SWITCH!!!

Obviously, I’m getting a little pissed off at all these car insurance commercials. They’re all saying how much people saved on average when they switched, as if this was somehow an indicator of how low-cost their insurance is. I have something to say to all of these people (Geico, Progressive, Allstate, and such). OF COURSE PEOPLE ON AVERAGE SAVED MONEY SWITCHING TO YOUR CAR INSURANCE! OTHERWISE THEY WOULDN’T SWITCH!!!

I mean, how is this not deceptive advertising? This statistic attempts to make it seem like the respective insurer is cheaper than others. They probably aren’t, but it makes it seem like they might be.

After all, each insurer uses different formulas to figure out how to balance their risk. As such, each insurer will charge the same person differently based on how they are spreading out their risk. In the end, one insurer may charge one person less money for car insurance than they would charge another whereas another insurer would be the reverse. All because their formulas work differently.

Thus, people may be able to save money by switching to an insurer that regards them as a better risk than their present insurer.  When people find out that someone would charge them less, they would switch. Obviously, they would not switch if they found out a new insurer would charge them more. Most people are not quite that dumb.

When would people switch? Most of the time, when they find out they can get insurance cheaper. Thus, when most people switch to any insurer, they will save money. THIS IS NOT A MEASURE OF HOW INEXPENSIVE AN INSURER IS! Instead, it is just a measure of how much certain people happened to save because a particular insurer considered them a lower risk than another did. This does not form a causal relationship to one particular insurer who is any cheaper. This is just an effect of the overall way that car insurance is set up in this country.

So, please, car insurers…stop this shit. I’m already so mad that I’m using caps to type screaming and everybody hates that already. Don’t make me get a bat. I’ll do it, I really will.

About David S. Atkinson

David S. Atkinson enjoys typing about himself in the third person, although he does not generally enjoy speaking in such a fashion. However, he is concerned about the Kierkegaard quote "Once you label me you negate me." He worries that if he attempts to define himself he will, in fact, nullify his existence...
