I did something really stupid this morning. However, through pure luck it did not work out particularly bad. That being said, I probably shouldn’t worry about wasps until I’ve woken up a little more.
You see, I was out on my back patio this morning just after I got up having my first cup of coffee of the day. I happened to notice a bit of a wasp nest sitting on the patio. Looking up to see where it might have come from, I noticed a nest in a vent on the side of my house that I don’t even think is connected to anything inside anymore.
Now, I haven’t really seen any wasps on my back patio so I assumed that this was a dead nest. Still, I thought I should get rid of it. Mind you, I had just woken up. I had coffee, but I hadn’t drunk any yet. Half asleep, I really shouldn’t have been attempting to deal with wasp nests.
Regardless, I noticed the vent was about the height of the snow shovel I had sitting on the patio. I took the shovel and scraped the nest out of the vent. As I lowered the shovel, I noticed wasps were coming out of the nest. Apparently the nest was not dead. Luckily, I reacted well and snapped the shovel to heave the nest over my fence into the alley. Then I got back from the fence and went back inside the house. Luckily as well, no one was in the alley.
I probably got luck on a number of counts, such as the fact that it was still relatively early in the morning and was kind of chilly. As such, the wasps were sleepy and didn’t react as appropriate to the dumb thing I did. Either way, I did not get stung. I probably deserved to for dealing with a wasp nest when I was half asleep, but either way I didn’t get stung. I’m grateful at least for that.
