Is “Is My Computer On” The Most Useless Web Site Ever?

A friend of mine was debating whether or not the apartment finding web site he was trying to use was the most useless web site ever. After all, it provided no pictures, costs, or contact information and served as little other than a gateway to membership whereupon they would supposedly help you find an apartment. However, I thought for sure there were other more useless web sites out there.

After all, what about Is My Computer On? Sure, the joke is a little funny…but it really is pretty useless. I’ve even looked at the code. It literally does nothing other than print “Yes.” It performs no calculations, does nothing. Of course, it doesn’t need to…but still. It would be more fun if it actually did something to determine.

I mean, at least the Virtual Stapler is a virtual stapler. At least Is It Christmas performs a calculation to find out whether or not it’s really Christmas. Same with Is Margret Thatcher Dead Yet. Admittedly, printing “Yes” is at least some determinant as to whether or not your computer is on, but it would be cooler if it at least did something figuring related.

Also, what if you accessed the site from a computer that isn’t yours? Sure, some could argue that whatever computer you are using is yours, but maybe not. Maybe yours is off and you are using a library one. Then, semantically at least, the site gives you wrong answers.

Now, I know this is pointless, but so are so many other things that I talk about. I just wish there was just a tiny little bit more to Is My Computer On. Since there isn’t, it gets my vote for most useless web site (even over The Really Big Button That Doesn’t Do Anything). Feel free to attempt to correct me with the site you prefer. I’d love to see some of the other freaky useless sites out there.
